Glass Coffee Table
A Touch of Class with a Modern Coffee Table
It is thought that the invention or creation of the coffee table occurred during the late Victorian era in Britain back in 1868. The design was somewhat different to what we are used to, as at 27 inches tall it was much higher than today’s standard height. It was during the Ottoman Empire that the low table that we know as the modern coffee table came into existence. And while traditional tables were made of wood, one of the most popular choices in modern times is the glass coffee table.
Even though most households own one, many people do not realize the significance of a coffee table. In the past owners of them were usually of high ranking nobility, and the first glass one was made out of Venetian crystal back at the start of the 1900’s. Obviously at that time they were hugely expensive, although thankfully with modern technology the price has diminished in such a way that anybody can own one, regardless of social class or standing.
A well designed and beautiful glass coffee table can add a look of sophisticated elegance to any room, although they tend to be used primarily in a living or sitting room. While they can provide a decorative aspect to a room, they are also a highly functional piece of furniture. They are usually placed in front of the couch within easy reach to place cups and books etc on, although a nice quality table can look good wherever it’s situated.
When deciding upon a new table it is a good idea to keep in mind the style and design of the rest of the furniture in the room. The table you choose should blend in with your other furnishings and compliment it perfectly. Size and space is also an important element when making your decision. If you need extra storage space, a table that has shelves or a small cupboard underneath the main top section can be ideal, as would one that opens up and doubles as a cabinet.
The standard height of a coffee table is usually 16 inches, although they are also available as low as 11 inches. The height you choose should depend on the height of your couch or chairs. If the table is too tall then it will lose some of its functionality. The shorter tables are usually designed to compliment modern contemporary lounge suites that tend to sit lower.
The price of a glass coffee table will obviously be a consideration to those working within a budget. But while it is possible to pay a very high price for a good quality table, it is also possible to buy very nice classy looking ones on the lower end of the price scale. A lot will depend on which type of finish the table has. A brass or iron legged table will usually tend to be a little more expensive than one with wooden legs, although if the wood is of an exceptional quality and has been hand carved then that will increase the price.
